    Seems like the ZR1 would be an expensive mistress to keep. I'd pick the LT4 if I was shopping for a C4, but if I couldn't find that at a reasonable price and mileage, definitely a '96 model. I do like your Collector's Edition Vette!

    As an aside.... I think GM has had the cheapest, plasticy-est interfaces ok fnany vehicle I've driven in the last 30+ years. It really started around the Grand Am era and continued well beyond. They felt way behind on the "look and feel" department. To this day I find their trucks have that same feel. I can't really pinpoint it, but it just feels like it's something old rolled out as something new... but not done better the second time around. Anybody?

      GM had some of the worst plastics in the industry. I blame the bean counters who figured they could save a few dimes per car.

    I just base my opinion on what I like and what I'd have the most fun with... C4. I think they actually looked way better. I think the C5 had to force the shape around the chassis more so than the C4. Even with that center framework on the C4, I think it would have been FAR weaker frame wise than the C5. But yeah, regardless of all that... I still prefer that sharper look of the C4. I'm not a speed demon or habitual curve-hanger so C4 for me. Aesthetics. I can't help it. I still prefer the original wedge Fiero compared to all others after as well. I'm a design purist. 😁

    LT4 - better daily driver ZR-1 - better weekend car I'll take the LT4 for a daily or weekend car. Cheaper to buy, cheaper to own and all around cheaper to repair when necessary. Hands down, the winner. The ultimate loser? ANY automatic Corvette. 🤮

    I figured out early on, by the way you devoted so much time to the C4 that was your fav. I have a 05 C6, I love it, but that awful PCM! When it no longer starts, replacing that stupid little box will set you back 2 grand.

    Good overview! I just got my first Vette, a C5 Z06, last year. The LS6 revs eagerly and puts more of the power up top, which is tons of fun with the much shorter geared M12 transmission. The front end especially with aftermarket “sleepy LEDs looks much more sleek and interesting to me than the later models, and it holds value very well!

    C4 would be the one the heart would want. Back then it was the perfect analogue of Americans: looks cool from distance, but at close you realise it's just plastic. But C5 would be it. The last with hidden headlights and to modify it it wouldn't be lile destroying a museum piece.

    Great video man. This clarified a couple things for me. I almost went into c4 ownership, the retro looks but good performance numbers were selling points. Not to mention your earlier videos make it look like it's a great deal. But after watching this and being real with myself I would rather have the later models and not have the creature comfort compromises. I'm not in my 20s anymore, and if I don't have to deal with discomfort doing something I "enjoy" than I won't. I think my money is better spent on something newer. Honestly the comfort factor is what I'm about at middle age.

    I just bought a Triple black '92 Convertable, only 47,000 miles. Added a fresh set of BFG G-Force tires and I'm loving it as my new daily driver, 6 speeds are awesome ! .     If I had the money to buy a C6, I would buy a factory stock Firebird Trans Am WS6 instead of any of these 3 Corvettes and use the rest of the money for maintenance & insurance, still enjoy the sound of that amazing LS1 and then daily drive it until I die!

      I’ve actually cross shopped that car Trans Am with each of my Corvettes, and they’re about the same price! The Trans Ams don’t handle nearly as well, they feel enormous by comparison. But I love the T tops, the extra utility of the rear seats, and the much rowdier exhaust.

    I've owned all three: 1990 convertible, 2004 Z16 and 2009 Z06. They were all cool in their own way. I miss the C5Z Z16 because it was so raw, but it had a marginal looking/feeling interior. The C4 'vert was fun, but lots of gremlins. The C6Z is one of my favorite cars ever.

    I own an '88 C4 and an '03 C5. My C4 is dead because it won't pass California's smog test. It has 218,000 miles so I'm guessing the engine is shot. My C5 is awesome. It breezes through its smog test. The engine is so smooth and reliable - except for the rear main leak. 8-(

    I must say the C4 is the best looking of the bunch. Absolutely hated the styling of the C5 (and still so). C6 is respectable but I think the C4 is the most timeless look.

    As a person who's owned many corvettes in my years as well as other cars, (41 owned in 2016), I have to say the C-5 is the all around most durable Vette. It still outperforms 90%of the cars on the road and it is still the last sexy Corvette. Everything since is angular and bug like. Not the smooth aesthetics of the C-5. I also currently own a C-4 convertible which is still my favorite car to work on. It was so well thought out as far as serviceability. Wish it had carried over to the C-5. C-6s although faster, more powerful, took to technology more and lack the raw connection that the C-5 has, yet essentially it is the same chassis, suspension, drive train, and dimensional layout.

    C4 crapy electronic gauges up to 89; nylon gear that turns to shit in the pop-up headlights; gas door loses adhesivnes. I owned an 89 convertable, love the car except for the items I mentioned. My suggestion if you buy any Corvette, invested in the GM shop manual, not the cheap Chilton or Haynes manuals.

    I fell for my uncle with my name who had a Tbird for my ride for summer of 59. My Reatta was dying so before 2004 Christmas my wife organized my bluebird 2005 model premium model.

    So much here: Ford screwed up by advertising the car, taking deposits, and then taking over TWO YEARS to deliver the first car. When they did, it was a Frankenstein of Ford, Lincoln and Jaguar parts that didn't always complement each other; there's that motor, which keeps getting excused for being anemic and lower in power than some base Mustangs; and there's the fact that the car weighs as much as some four-door Fords. As bad a stumble for Ford as the XLR was for Cadillac.

      Interesting comparison. In many ways, the Tbird underperformed compared to the cheaper/more old school/more powerful Mustang GT Convertible that was already in the stable, in a similar way to the Cadillac XLR did compared to the cheaper/more old school/more powerful Corvette Convertible.

      Sure! But all of these gens had special performance editions (many of which I've already covered on this channel). For this test, I needed an "apples to apples" comparison for it to be fair, which meant base hatchback coupes with 6 speed manuals.

    I've done a lot of mechanical work on both of these cars. I bought a 93 anniversary edition ZR1 off marketplace for $3800.00 Hadn't been registered since 2016 (its the middle of 2024 now). I can change an OptiSpark with my eyes closed, so the LT1 and LT4 I pretty much can diagnose easily. I view all of the C4 Corvettes as cars that people who can't turn a wrench, shouldn't own! On the XR1, the secondaries have a butterfly setup that opens via "VACUUM" from the factory. It utilizes a vacuum pump under the headlight on the passenger side as well as the engines generated vacuum. Anyway, without going through everything, I love all the cars (L98, LT1, LT4. ZR1) from 91 to 1996. The real problem I have with this comparison between the LT4 and ZR1, is that the ZR1 is an absolute road car! Meet me on the Freeway or racetrack with the LT4 against my 93 ZR1, and let me show you the difference between the two. Look at the difference in Redlines! Don't get me wrong, I love both the LT1 and LT4! Also, let me feather the ZR1 out of the gates against the LT4, and not at 2k and hit it. I'm an ex-street racer and the ZR1 will pull hard against the LT4.

      It's true that the higher the revs/speeds, the more the ZR-1 would pull away from the LT4. But even from a standing start, it has a clear advantage over the LT4.
